Super compact with a multitude of uses - get one today!Dec 12, 2005
By T. Hassler The Gerber folding shovel is really top notch. Its quality construction is much like any other Gerber/Fiskars equipment I've owned - it doesn't disappoint.
The shovel I have is actually a little more agressively pointed than in the pictures, so I'm not sure if Gerber has addressed this as an issue or if the pictures were off.
The top of the handle is high density polycarbonate plastic and has a horizontal design like a spade should have. You can still use the verticle part of the steel handle if you wish, but there isn't much of it. The plastic will absorb some shock compared to steel-only, and it won't freeze to your hands, etc. The polycarb handle folds down on itself, so that it actually has 3 segments (instead of several designs which have 2 segments). This means you can stow the shovel in the included cordura nylon belt pouch which is no bigger than the shovel head itself. The handle pivot point locks and since it's square, doesn't rotate or twist easily. The steel which connects the blade to the handle fits nicely inside the A angle cutout of the handle, so when collapsed it is really thin.
The blade is high quality steel with the hinged handle connected at the top. This does limit the depth of the shovel a little, but I don't believe it's much of a factor, except maybe in really solid soil where you lose a little verticle travel when the ground butts up against the hinge.
It's very compact, light, comes with a solid belt sheath (easily convertible to pack carry) and stows away easily since it's so thin. I can put it in the side pockets of my doors or in the very small space above my rear wheel well without any problems (Trailblazer 4x4).
I really can find no fault with this item, it delivers on all fronts: usability, quality, compact storage, and rugged design. I will almost certainly be keeping one in both cars and in my 72 Hour survival kit. They are even reasonably priced. 5 Stars.

Great little shovel!Sep 10, 2007
By Nathan I picked up this shovel for lots of different uses ranging from digging out a stuck vehicle to garden work to having a little shovel my 3-year-old son can use. This tool is well-made and certainly worth the extra cost over the flimsy army-navy store shovels. It folds easily (even my son can do it!) and compactly into its durable sheath. Ergonomically, having the "D" handle is much nicer than a straight handle, and my second hand fits comfortably in the shaft/locking nut area. All in all, a great tool.

Excellent product for small digging. Even fits for bigger hands. Very easy to fold and carry along. Quality is key word in this product. Can not compare to any cheap ones I have had before.

I AM NO ORCHID THIEF, BUT......May 31, 2009
By D. Blankenship I have two of these folding shovels; one for each of our cars. We live in a semi-isolated area and my wife and I travel in extremely isolated areas in all kinds of weather and conditions. I have actually had to use these shovels more than once and am extremely happy with them. More than once I have had to use it to dig out of a mess. This tool, along with a couple of others, should be mandatory in every vehicle on the road.
The handle of this shovel actually allows you to get a good grip and push; unlike the more straight handled ones. Due to the material there is less shock on your hands and arms. The entire tool folds down well and is extremely light and packs well. Most importantly though, it is quite sturdy and durable and can take quite a beating.
To be honest, I am a borrower of flowers and plants. We live in an area where there are dozens upon dozens of abandoned farm places, some dating back well over 150 years. Some are no more than faint foundations. All are located in areas that are quite difficult to reach. Many of these old home places had gardens; specifically, flower gardens. Many of them had various verities of bulb plants and blooming bushes. Some of these species of flowers are simply no longer available, which is a true shame. Many of these house places are located on what is now government land. As I travel the country and study the old topographical maps, which by the way, the government is more than happy to provide, I spot or locate these old sites and pay them visits. Now I am never greedy, no, no, no, but I do take a goodly sample of various flowers and shrubs which I locate, always of course, leaving plenty for others who are flower kleptomaniacs and/or simply wish to gaze upon them when they are in bloom. As for offending the government...well to be quite frank, I could care less. I always carry this shovel with me along with a box of plastic trash bags...just in case. You would be amazed at how well it works at quickly removing a few bulbs, roots and such. As a matter of fact, I was able to remove, pack and load a seven foot hydrangea once in less than 10 minutes, take or leave a few. Wonderful old plant and it now has been living in its new home for eight years and doing well. Also starts have been shared with several friends.
The shovel is light enough and cheap enough that if I get caught, I can hurl the thing quite some distance into the bushes, grab my camera and swear up and down that I was merely taking pictures...this has happened before, and trust me, it works!
The shovel is also useful around the house and is absolutely great to let small grandkids use when they want to "help" with the yard work.
I do highly recommend this product.
