I have owned this 40 qt model for 3 or 4 years and think that this cooler is great. Its a nice size for a family of 2-4 for a picnic or weekend camping trip (I use this cooler for the stuff that has to stay cold and a large plastic tote for other stuff like buns). Its pretty small compared to 60, 80, 100 qt models so I'd look at in a store before ordering.
Its nice to have the wheels (the 60 qt model does as well but I don't think the 80 or 100 qt models do). The larger size models also have a drain which I did not care about (this one is small enough to wash in a larger kitchen sink and I mainly use ice packs).
It works as advertized. On a recent camping trip we left on a Friday in 90 degree weather and came home Sunday and the ice packs were still frozen. A friend had also pored some ice into the cooler and the ice was still frozen/sticking to the ice packs when we got home.

This cooler did indeed do a very good job keeping ice for days at a time. If the ice didn't stay frozen, the water did stay cold for at least 5 days. The one MAJOR problem I had with this cooler is that it does not have a drain. Every other version of this cooler available comes with a drain except this one. I only wish I had realized that before I had bought it. Unfortunately though, this is the only Max Cold cooler that has wheels which was the major reason I bought it other then the Max Cold feature.

I purchased this after reading customer reviews.
Used it during the hurricane last summer in the Louisiana heat. Kept ice for three days before I emptied it.
Wheels, handle and lid very durable. Easy to clean.

This cooler keeps ice well but there are a couple of problems with the design. The cooler doesn't have a drain so it's a pain to drain the water when it's still full of food and drinks. The removable lid was a good idea but very poorly executed. The lid always falls off when you have it open to remove food. The lid is also prone to flying off(even when closed)when driving with it in the bed of your truck or boat. Be sure to tie it down because there isn't a latch to keep it closed.

I have been checking out coolers at local stores (Target, Walmart, Kmart, Sears, etc.) and also online. I prefer personal-sized coolers but decided to look for a mid-sized, wheeled cooler that can keep its contents ice cold the longest and which have excellent build quality. This is my introduction to "5 day" coolers.
The Igloo MaxCold 40 qt Wheeled Cooler was purchased on sale for $35 at Target. The size was the draw, not too big to drag along to the beach, barbecues, sporting events, and carry in the car. At the same time, it was big enough to carry drinks and items for an entire day out with the family. Plus the wheels work well and are an appreciated convenience when having to walk a distance with the cooler.
So far, this cooler has kept contents ice cold significantly longer, about 1.5 days longer, than an older Coleman 50 qt cooler. The walls of the cooler and lid are noticeably thicker, which adds more insulation. Average time period that contents remain ice cold is just under 3 days. I pack the cooler using cubed ice and pre-chilled drinks, and was not expecting a full 5 day duration without larger blocks of ice in the cooler. In addition, family members are always going in and out of the cooler, which allows the cold to escape.
The major drawback to this cooler is the absence of a drainage outlet. The drain would help on extended trips, especially when adding new cans and ice to the cooler. Allowing some water to drain would greatly reduce the weight.
Overall, the Igloo MaxCold 40 qt Wheeled Cooler is a good cooler missing one key feature found on most full-sized coolers, a drainage outlet. 4.0 out of 5.0 score, which would be 4.9 with a drainage outlet.
