3Imperfect, but not horrible.Jun 13, 2011
By Justin Hui
Pros:

Sharpness: this knife draws blood and gives me minor cuts from glancing contact whenever I practice flipping with it. Some cuts are shallow and don't even hurt, but some cuts bleed for a bit, even though I barely touched it while flipping.

Durability: this blade is made from 440C Stainless steel, and I suspect the handles are made of the same material as well. Definitely strong; I don't see this accidentally breaking.

Pin Construction: the pins which the handles rotate upon look large and well mushroomed-out. Thus, the pins shouldn't loosen up as easily as an average CCC balisong with pin construction. However, even pins have their limits, and it is possible that these will also loosen, if more slowly than other pin-constructed balisongs.

Smooth Action: right now, it has reasonably good smooth flipping action. I expect this to change over time as the pins slowly loosen and/or break.

Blade Style: The tanto blade style isn't very common in balisongs, and the tanto blade on this one has a tip that's nice and sharp.

Cons:

Aesthetics: seeing one side of the knife that's completely flat isn't visually appealing (at least to me). The ground side looks alright to me, though.

Handle Covering: The handles are covered with this black epoxy. This epoxy comes off very easily (which makes a bit of a mess now and then), and doesn't even provide a good grip. In fact, this epoxy makes the handles pretty slippery compared to other balisongs.

Weight: for the slippery epoxy covering, this knife is too heavy; I have trouble flipping it around without it slipping out of my hands.

Pin Construction: this makes the flipping action non-adjustable, so even if it won't loosen quickly, it will still loosen, and there'll be no way to correct it. I also believe pivot pins have a greater chance of breaking than good torx screws (which I'd prefer because they are adjustable).

Tang Pin: doesn't seem to do much, since even brand new, the handle's ends will touch when this knife is opened. Mine is brand new, yet there's already a noticeable amount of side-to-side bladeplay. Plus, despite how wide the tang pin is, it still produces slight dents in the handles, which makes the bladeplay worse.

T-Latch: doesn't seem to do much, since the handles move so close together, it's too long to keep a tight lockup. Plus, when flipping, it can swing to the left and right, and in some cases, it will get stuck there, which may interfere in opening or closing the knife.

Price: You pay $40 for a knife, but its quality and performance seems more like a $20 balisong. It's still a decent knife compared to a lot of other cheaper balisongs, but to me, not worth $40.

Overall, I was disappointed with what I consider the flaws of this knife in comparison to the cost. Most CCC balisongs with pin construction are not as good quality, but there are some that match the quality and performance of this knife without such a high cost. Some balisongs are even cheaper, yet surpass the quality of this knife. However, despite its many flaws, I still give it three stars for better-than-average pin construction, sharpness, uncommon tanto-styled blade, and durability of its 440C stainless steel.

5blade only on one side.May 29, 2011
By travis
I was excited when it came, the shipping speed was good. but when i opened it up, the blade is sharpened only on one side. if you place the blade on a table and flip it over, the other side is completely flat. This renders the knife almost unusable because it is not very sharp, and because one side is not sharpened, it doesn't fit into the handles of the knife very well. right now i am trying to sharpen the blade myself. but even after it is sharpened it still won't be a very proper blade. i'm disappointed in Bear and Sons, the other knife i ordered from them awhile ago was perfect. i would have rated this five stars if only the blade was correctly sharpened and shaped. But as it is i give it one out of five. EDIT!! After sharpening this knife and reshaping the blade a bit with a metal file, this is actually a very great knife. The balance on it is perfect, and i love the tanto shape of the blade. I love this knife now. The only problem with it is no latch gate, but that is easily fixed with a rubber o-ring, so I don't care. If you don't mind spending a lot of time sharpening and reshaping part of the blade, I highly recommend this knife. I just wish Bear and Sons would have made this knife properly.

4High quality but could use more workmanshipAug 31, 2011
By Jim
Overall this knife is very high quality and well made. The blade is exceptional, however there is flashing from the handle coating in all the holes, which I removed with about 10-minutes and a sharp knife. It does require some use to break-in the handle/blade connection, but this is expected with a quality product. The blade is very sharp and well ground and the design very well thought out.
