4Hoochie Mama Elk call reviewSep 12, 2007

Very easy to use call, right out of the box. It gives you a good estrus cow call and a good cow in distress call. If you're hunting with gloves, I highly suggest you take your glove off when using, as you need to push the end with a closer seal then your gloved hand will allow in order to get the air to flow properly.

Purchased one several years ago for the same price I paid for this one. The reason I purcased it was to have a backup incase the old one died or got lost. The material and sound quality are not even close to my old one. It soundes tiney and feels like a toy.
I can only rate it 2 stars.

Don't listen to those guys that claim mouth calls are the only way to go, and that these hand calls are for "novices," etc. That is non-sense. This call sounds nearly identical to 80% of the natural cow calls I've heard. Is it monotonous, in that it makes nearly the same noise every time? Yes. But, if you've observed cows first hand, you'll notice that they very often make the exact same mew sound every time. But, like most rules, there are exceptions, and that is when a really intense estrus call is the best tool in the bag. Unlike most mews (the sound cows make most of the time), a true cow-in-estrus call often DOES vary in tone and sound, which will require your breath, creativity, and practice. So, the notch on this call where you can adjust it to "estrus" (it actually says "estrus" on it) is kind of misleading. Yes, increasing the "mew" signifies more of an estrus sound, as cows in estrus also make elongated mews, but this call really cannot make that super hyper, up and down "meeeee-meeeeewwww" of a cow that is ready to have a bull hop right on her.

I gave it 4 stars only in the sense that it's application is mildly limited to mews--but for mews, it is excellent. Don't let the guys at the store convince you into buying a handful of different cow calls, saying they each serve a different purpose and sound, and that you'll need each one for something different. Bear in mind, some of the worst elk calls I've ever heard were made by elks.

If you opt to purchase and master a mouth reed (which can be an excellent tool while bow hunting, and is unarguably more rewarding when you call elk in) this product is still great for when you're still learning how to use mouth calls, as until you master them you run the risk of being around a bull and make a cow call with a mouth reed or mouth call and mess it up. Not cool, especially when you're around the only bull you've seen all week. This call is tough to mess up, as it emits a nice "mew" with the push of your finger.
