Sharp strong versatile fixed blade at a good priceJun 09, 2008

I have used this knife for nearly a year for outdoor cooking, splitting small logs, cutting rope, boxes, and whittling wood. This blade is very strong and holds a sharp edge. The knife is very light and carries well on the body either as a sheath knife or wrapped around the neck with paracord. I have found the steel to be quite rust resistant and not prone to damage easily. The rubberized handle has a good grip but is not the most durable material if abused. SOG is a great company and they guarantee most of their blades for life. I have used them at least twice for warantee work and they do a speedy job of repairing/replacing. Of course, the best thing about this knife is the price. I have paid 3 times the price for other knives and then goten rid of them because they pale in comparison to the Field Pup. The blade shape lends itself to do most chores. The only thing its not best suited for is heavy chopping or batoning because it lacks the size and heft.

The Go To KnifeJan 21, 2010

I have ordered many knives off of amazon.com and they tremble in the site of my Pup. This is my go to knife do to its decent size, comfort, and its ability to just just about anything very well. In my opinion the picture of the larger man in the blue jean overalls dwarfs the true size of the pup. When i opened the box i was astonished by the beauty of this knife. It is the sharpest knife i have ever used, (and that is saying something). I do not have a problem with the sheath. There were velcro straps to keep the knife in place. They were getting in my way so, i just cut them off with the knife. The knife sliced through the straps like butter. The first day I got this knife i had no idea the power of this knife. By the end of the first day i had recieved 4 or 5 cuts on my fingers and hands. Over all I LOVE THIS KNIFE!!!

Wolf in sheep's clothingAug 12, 2010
By Tyler K. Smith I initially ordered this knife for college, because I wanted either a Kabar or a SOG fixed blade knife that I could carry without frightening my roommates or others...that is when I discovered the SOG Field Pup. At first glance (and even second glance) the Field Pup appears to be a rather plain and generic looking knife; however, it is far from average. In hand, the SOG Field Pup feels like top tier knife, but at 35 dollars it won't break the bank.
Pros: CHEAP: for 35 dollars, it is a very high value knife Factory SHARP: the knife came sharper than any knife I have owned and that is including my straight razors I use to shave! Amazing and functional triangular jimping down the spine of the blade Lightweight Easily concealable even when worn on belt 4 inch blade AUS-8 steel is a great blade material that holds a good edge and has decent corrosion resistance Looks plain and unsuspecting (it's better not to scare people if you can help it) Sheath is MOLLE compatible and can be stitched onto any MOLLE vest Sheath is styled after the SOG Seal (Team/Pup) sheaths which are the best of the best Soft but durable kraton handle
Cons: The convex to concave shape of the blade make it more difficult to sharpen Shape of the handle makes prevents the blade from fitting all the way in the sheath The handle strap on the sheath uses velcro AND a button to hold the blade, its only slightly more secure but it is completely unnecessary and only makes it more difficult to secure your knife Satin polish smudged easily (only a problem if you have OCD)
Although expensive knives are nice to own, I've grown to like high value knives just as much. The Field Pup is a great knife with only a few problems and is small enough to carry everywhere but large enough to use as a tactical knife.

Great Little KnifeJun 11, 2010
By James Keener I bought 2 of these recently, 1 for my grandson and 1 for me. I have lots of large impressive-looking knives, some would be classed as survival knives and some are probably more for tactical use. But I needed a small, handy, all around knife for general camp tasks, etc. The Field Pup fills this niche well, and I don't think you will be disappointed if you purchase one. Very sharp out of the box, and the blade design is perfect for general duty. The blade, made of AUS 8, is thin enough for efficient slicing and has a slight recurve which should make for good draw cutting. On the spine just in front of the handle is a curved ramp with very well executed jimping, allowing a good "choke-up" hold for better control when doing fine work. The sheath is cordura nylon with a pouch on the front for any accessories you might want to put in there, such as a small sharpening stone, a firesteel, or a multi-tool. This type of sheath is becoming more and more common on many models of knife, and it seems that people either love them or hate them. I think it's just fine for the Field Pup. Since I'm no knife fighter, and primitive camping is pretty much a thing of the past for me, I suspect that I will find myself wearing the little Field Pup more than any of the other knives in my stable. You won't scare off any boogy men or kill any grizzly bears with this knife, but if you can do without those fantasies, I think the little Field Pup will really grow on you. A quality product for a very decent price.

Great KnifeJun 08, 2010
By Air_Male_Gemini Got the SOG Field Pup knife quickly by UPS. So far I've been using the Field Pup for bushcrafting. It has a full tang with what feels like a thick and sturdy rubberized handle. The handle is made of Kraton and is stiff not spongy. I expect the handle to last a long time. The knife comes with a rope for a lanyard and a nylon sheath. The nylon sheath looks good, feels good and is holding up very well. The sheath has an improved mounting system that allows it to be attached vertically, horizontally, on old and new military systems or just on the common mans belt. The knife is a 4 inch long stainless steel blade that is razor sharp out of the packaging. I can do bushcrafting all day before needing to touch up the blade to razor sharp for the next mornings shave. The knife can be used for batoning limbs the size of your fist and chopping limbs no bigger than the size of your thumb. For anything bigger than that you'll want a bigger knife or carry an axe or machete with you.
