Good tool.Mar 28, 2009
By Benjamin C. Parsons I usually steer away from gimmicky items, but I trust the Gerber brand and was impressed by the positive reviews here and elsewhere. Two small details kept it from a 5 Star rating. The handle 'feels' an inch or two too long, and the heel of the axe is enclosed in the scabbard. The first complaint is personal and not a big deal at all. I camp quite a bit (Boy Scout leader). I use a hand axe as a light hammer as much as I use it to hack wood. Having the heel exposed in the scabbard allows hammer use while keeping the 'business end' safely enclosed. I'll overcome that by being careful. It's very light weight. Mine was sharp enough out of the box. Saw is way more useful than I first imagined. It's comforting to know that replacement saws are available. Nice touch from a quality brand. Well recommended.

A tough, usefull tool.Jul 19, 2008
By Shannon Hill I bought this to use when camping/hiking/hunting. I has proven useful and much more durable than the standard wooden handle model. My kids haven't broken it yet and it shows no rust! The saw is good for small camping/woods tasks like removing small limbs that are in the way. My only small complaint is that is hard to find when you drop it in the dark and the texture of the handle somehow keeps reflective tape (my solution to finding it in the dark) from sticking very well. I ended up putting on a bright colored lanyard. Overall, a good practical addition. I will probably buy another one to keep in my truck.

Impressive Chopping Ability, But...not too durableApr 18, 2010
By S. Kailihiwa I loved this axe the moment I put it to use for clearing brush. The weight in the head is nice and allows you to get much more out of your swing than using a machete. This axe will blow through trees and branches that are 1"-3" with no problem at all. If you want to take on anything bigger you need to use a bigger axe or saw. The edge will need to be touched up every other day or so of continual use as long as you are not chopping rocks with it. Luckily it is very easy to touch up the edge of this axe.
My only problem with this axe is the design of the head and how the handle wraps around the head instead of the head going around the handle. After a week of serious chopping I noticed that wood chips were being forced between the head and the handle. This happened so much so that the plastic around the head started to bulge out and so far one side has partially cracked off. The axe still performs well even if it's not as pretty as it once was. Their "gator" grip on the handle only lasted a day of use.
In my opinion Gerber just needs to do some slight modifications to the design to make this a genuinely stellar axe. Just putting a lip on each side of the head so that the handle could be tucked behind the handle would do the job perfectly.

Very coolFeb 07, 2007
By Lawrence Washington this is a great product the edge was a little dull when it came but i sharped it and now it is sharp as a knife. The saw in handle is tough and has cut easily through every so far. good combo if you go hunting or camping.

Weak sheathSep 30, 2010
By Westy One Within six weeks of use (chopping firewood for camping) the sheath for the blade has become badly chipped away, with slivers of wood getting between it and the blade, exposing a large portion of one side of the blade. I do not believe the axe is safe to use and am returning it to Gerber for warranty replacement.
