5Very Good, Very Good Price -- and here's a little adviceDec 26, 2011
By Timothy Miller
These are very good binoculars. I've owned two pair for about a year. I just lost one pair. I wouldn't consider ordering anything else.

Here's some advice -- resist the temptation to spend a lot more money on binoculars. These are about as good as binoculars get. I don't mean to knock similar binoculars from other manufacturers at a similar price. They are probably equally good.

Birders -- and likely other binocular users -- are often superstitious about binoculars. They strongly believe that the really expensive binoculars (sometimes over $2000) are "better," in spite of specifications identical to much cheaper binoculars such as these. They usually believe that light transmission is better, focus is better, and that color is brighter or more true.

Yet if you try careful blindfolded comparisons you'll find that birders can't tell the difference between ultra-expensive binoculars and inexpensive binoculars like those reviewed here.

With expensive binoculars there's a strong psychological suggestion effect going on. If you spent a lot of money on your binoculars, you'll have a strong expectation that you will see better through them. Sort of like a placebo effect, or expensive wine. Most people who go to expensive restaurants don't know that much about wine and the quality of wine is highly subjective anyway. They will develop a strong impression that the most expensive wine also tastes the best.

Most binocular purchasers appear clueless about binoculars. Read between the lines on Amazon user reviews. "These seem pretty good, though I wish I could afford a more expensive pair." Pretty typical, I'm afraid.

Meanwhile, manufacturers resort to all kinds of obfuscation to create the misleading impression that their more expensive binoculars offer better vision than their cheaper models. For example, Bushnell, the manufacturer of the binoculars here reviewed, claims more expensive binoculars feature "Color-tuned, high-resolution ED Prime Extra-Low Dispersion glass." You'd think you'd see better through these, wouldn't you? Yet some of these words are Bushnell's trademarks. They have no particular technical or scientific meaning. Additionally, if you study these claims, you'll find that no test data support the suggestion that you can see any better through them.

(You'll also notice that the manufacturers of ultra-expensive binoculars, often made in Europe, also fail to mention any calibrated test data. If they did have such data, they would advertise it!)

Here's the un-embellished truth:

--Most good roof prism binoculars, including rather cheap ones, like these, use "BaK-4" prisms. Those are the best prisms you can get in binoculars.

--Most good roof prism binoculars, including rather cheap ones, like these, use "fully multicoated lenses." Those are the best lenses you can get in binoculars.

--These are roof prism binoculars. Most birders use roof prism binoculars. (They look like the light goes straight through, though it does bounce around inside.) Roof prism binoculars have inherently better optics, compared to Porro-prism binoculars. (Those are wider and more angular looking.)

If you don't believe me, read the Wikipedia article on binoculars. It supports the assertions I've made above.

Naturally, my review will infuriate certain owners of certain binoculars.

I have the impression that superstition about "good" binoculars is a historical artifact. Today BaK-4 lenses and fully multicoated lenses are cheaply mass produced in factories by robots. This kind of optical quality wasn't available, or was very expensive, in decades past.

I acknowledge that some binoculars are just poorly made. I've owned a few pair like that. These are not. They are well made. Most roof-prism binoculars made by reputable manufacturers are well-made.

Features sometimes make a difference. These are waterproof and fog-proof. They are rubber-armored. That makes them less slippery and less likely to break if you drop them. They have adjustable eye relief so they work well with and without eyeglasses. Those are the features that most binocular users will care about.

You still need to know about specifications. Most birders use 8X40, 8X42, 10X40 or 10X42. The difference between 40 and 42 millimeters in the objective lens is negligible. 8 or 10 refers to magnification. With ten power, you get more magnification, but many users find 10 power binoculars too jiggly to get a good look, especially if the object is far away. With eight power, you get less magnification, but a steadier image. This is a question of taste.

With higher magnification, a tripod (or monopod) is helpful, and that requires a tripod mount. These binoculars don't have a tripod mount, but you don't need one, because they are only 8-power. As far as I can tell, few roof plane binoculars have tripod mounts.

You've also got to look out for gimmicks and inappropriate specifications. I can't think of any reason to buy fixed-focus binoculars for example. They are just not as good. Zoom-able binoculars have inherently inferior optics. I suggest you avoid them. For outdoor use, I can't think of any reason to use an objective lens less than 40 mm., assuming you want real binoculars and not a toy for a child. I don't know much about high-end image-stabilizing binoculars, but I suggest you avoid the inexpensive ones.

Birding is a great recreation, not to mention other activities that require binoculars. I hate to see nice people needlessly parted with their hard-earned money. This is my only motive for writing this review.

5Excellent Binoculars..Dec 26, 2010
By Jon
The ones I bought are the Bushnell H20 8 x 42 with the roof prism. I have never owned or used binoculars before so I was a bit unsure of what to buy. I spent probably a week reviewing various ones on amazon and at product websites including Bushnell's site. Based on the fact that my price range was under $80 I wanted binoculars that retailed for over $100 but were on sale. I also did not want to compromise quality based on prior experiences of you get what you pay for. I won't compare these to top end models because these are the only ones I've owned. So now on to the review.

So I received these a few days ago and I am very impressed. Right off the bat you can tell these are durable and of quality construction. The size is nice, not super compact but not bulky. They weigh 25 oz, which is not much and they don't feel even that heavy. I really like how they feel in the hands. Nice and solid. The rubber grips on the side are nice and the solid exterior skin feels complete. No wobbly bits or cheap plastic. Solid all around construction. Also it came with straps to hang it around your neck. These aren't the expensive kind of straps so you may want to buy a pair of nice camera straps if you are planning to wear these around the neck alot. Also it has a nice soft case.

There are rubber caps for the lenses that are strapped to the middle and also connected rubber eye cups that are removable. You also get a cleaning cloth that can be stored in the case.

I've read some reviews where people claimed that these might not fit someone with a wider face, which I find very hard to believe because they fitment on my eyes results in a fairly close setting with plenty of room to expand. Your eyes would have to be very far apart to not be able to use these.

As a novice, it took me all of 5-10 minutes to configure them and start focusing in on objects outside the house. This morning after a little adjustment I was able to read a street sign over 300 yards away. It is very easy to adjust these from short distances to far. Yesterday I was able to watch a blue jay on a limb about 8-10 yards away and it was very clear. Adjusting between 8-10 yards and 300 yards is pretty easy and quick. I have not tried further out but they should have a field of vision somewhere around 365 yards at the 1000 yard distance. The optics are very good. Not shaky at all. Even at a pretty far distance they are very stable. Very impressed.

Bushnell is known as a solid manufacturer of binoculars and other hunting/camping equipment. They are a solid company and this is a great product. You want a well known company that stands behind their products in case you have any issues that need resolved. Bushnell has been around a long time. So brand was pretty important to me.

Another reason i bought these was because they are also fog proof and waterproof. I wanted something durable and quality built that would last a very long time in all sort of conditions. I have not tested the water proof claim yet but with the eye cups and lense caps on there is a noticeable seal on these that is impressive. I plan on taking these hunting, bird watching, camping as well as to concerts. They are rugged and dependable with crystal clear optics. I had no problems buying these from Optics Sale on amazon.

Whether these go with you hunting, bird watching, camping, to ball games, to concerts or just get put in your survival bag you will be happy.

4H20 Binos 150842Jul 13, 2009
By dahdidah "Bill"
September: The longer I own these binoculars the more I like them now that these have taken some trips. Fit and finish is as good as it gets, Optical qualities are very good. I should have bought 2 pair, uno por me esposa ....
July:
I needed a pair of decent quality binos for a trip to Alaska to observe whales and wild life. The weather was going to be lousy so I wanted anti-fog and waterproof features plus the nifty rubber armor coating found on quality items. After checking the specs from the many models available I chose the Bushnell H20 because this pair seemed to have everything and didn't cost a fortune for the few times they will be used, good choice. The Binos arrived in a few days in a rather small box, the roof prism construction sure makes for a small bino.

Well how is performance, GREAT! The fit and finish is excellent, the extendable eye cups work perfect for me with or without glasses on. The 4 attached lense covers didn't give me any trouble and the rubber armor finish works like it should and gives a high touch of quality. Since the binos were carried in and out of a Warm Cabin into the chilly wet air I was worried about fogging up but there was non, the view was always crystal clear.

The only slight negative is the neck strap, opt for a nice cloth one from a camera store with more positive adjusters since the stockers allowed the strap to slip loose and almost fell to the floor. Something to watch for and check now and then.

Overall very worth the ~~$80, 4.5 stars ! I would buy another pair for my RV and day car. Why not 5 stars, well I don't know just how better a 5 star rated bino would be.

5Great BinucularMar 02, 2010
By E. Alhanoun
I bought this Binocular for my recent trip to Hawaii, and it did exactly what it was supposed to do. The 42 mm lens made it easy to see stuff even when the light was minimal. The extendable lens cups is a wonderful feature especially if you wear glasses. The focus was easy to perform. It's size was relatively small for this type (Roof Prism) and the power of 8X42mm. I have not soaked it in water yet, but the lable says it should survive. All in all, it looks like a nice, well build, and fairly priced binocular. I would recommend it in a blink of an eye. However, if you have shaky hands you probably would rather get a less magnification power (say 6X) as it may be a problem if you cannot keep it steady.

5A tremendous product for the priceDec 30, 2010
By Mick
I know binocs as I have three and have bought many more for others, and have used them for many hours a day while birding. My best glass costs 20 times what this one does and is, admittedly, better optically. But not by a bunch. This binoc has surprisingly good optical performance, reasonably good short focus distance, easy to use eyecups so it works well with eyeglasses or without eyeglasses, is waterproof, compact, fairly light, and focuses easily. It "folds" to a eye to eye distance that will work with smaller people than some binocs. When I need another spare, this is the one I will buy (we bought this one for our granddaughter). I think my wife will buy one for use as her spare and to take to the theatre. It performs so much better than the smaller ones. Based on my experince, I think you have to pay over $350 for other binocs to even come close to the performance of this binoc.

This binoc will easily satisfy most buyers with its performance, price, and warranty. You just cannot go wrong with this one. Until now there was no really good, cheap, roof prism binocular. Now there is.
