BenGay for your antique powder armsDec 28, 2011
By Vance No 1 - Yes, it does literally smell like BenGay.
No 2 - It works well and keeps the fouling to a minimal. I take a whole mess of felt wads and bore butter in my other hand and I work it in until they have a decent yellow (not oversoaked) to them.
Tip: warm up the bore butter before you begin to work it into the felt. It makes it easier, more even spread and soaks into the felt better. This tube holds enough for well over 500 pads...I already used it on about over 1000 and I still have half the tube.
Great stuff except for the smell.Jul 27, 2006
By SevereWX This is great lube for lead conicals, it cuts down on the fouling surprisingly well. It works well as a patch lube too. The smell is kinda funny, you have a sort of Bengay smell with the yellow tube, and the green tube pine scent smells similar to Pine-Sol. I guess it's too much to ask to have an oderless lube since it's inevitable that no matter how hard you try, you always end up getting it all over your hands and clothes. Lube like this is always messy, not just this specific brand. Used as a bore seasoning, it does prevent excess fouling, which extends the number of shots needed before swabbing out the barrel, but this "seasoning" stuff will build up over time and need to be removed to get the excess buildup out. This requires a thorough cleaning with hot soapy water or a petroleum based solvent. Though I haven't tried it, I imagine it would also make a good lube for cast bullets loaded in smokeless powder cartridges.
The bore butter also does a good job of protecting metal parts from the elements. My front-stuffers stored with the bores treated with a thin coat of Bore Butter have not had any problems with rust or corrosion, though if stored for extended lengths of time, I would recommend a protectant specifically made for long duration storage.
