Newer Design ?May 09, 2009

The image shows two pieces. The heat deflector image (bottom) does not show a hole in the middle so it can be placed under the stove to protect the fuel line as a simple firewall (best use for safety reasons, not heat reflection to pan) .
The MSR Base options might not accept ths piece. The windshield is a good option, but most times I do not use. A large paper clip is recommended to hold the two ends securely together. The price is too high.

MSR stove heat and wind screeenMay 25, 2010
By P. M. Press A windscreen is essential for the operation of the wisperlite stove in anything stronger than a mild breeze, otherwise cooking time is noticeably affected. This screen is however rather flimsy, (very expensive for what you get). It would appear to be not too durable especially for any long hike as the screen is bound to be folded in your pack and time will tell how many folds and unfoldings it will be able to withstand before weakening along the fold lines. It also needs a paper clip or something to "keep it together" when in operation unless you fold the "wings" together...more fold lines!!It would help if the new stove "Blurb" mentioned that it comes with a screen as well.

$14 seems a lot for what is essentially a piece of light aluminium...May 19, 2008
By Doug Gilmour An essential piece of kit for the Whisperlite stove and MSR milk you $14 for it!
MSR could do with redesigning the box for this item. It arrived crushed and could easily have fallen out of the box.
More likely to blow off the stove and into a ravine...Dec 21, 2011

Technically, the reflector does what it should - reflect radiant heat and limit airflow
to only what's needed to support the combustion. In perfect site conditions, it will meet
the thermal requirements. However, mine got caught by the wind and was ripped off the stove
and blew somewhere where it could be retrieved.
My guess is that if you were to secure the reflector to the stove legs, you now run the risk
of having the entire stove moved by the wind - which would create a dangerous scenario.
A modification would be to punch a small hole in the windscreen. Tie through is small peice of cord.
If you are in abysmal conditions with high wind - would could tie the other end of the cord around
a rock so that the windscreen can be stolen from you by the wind.
Useful addition to MSR stovesAug 26, 2011
By Tekon I use this screen to block wind and increase my stoves heating efficiency.
IT comes supplied with screens for fuel stoves that sits on the ground as well as for canister mounted gas stoves, If you have a stove this little things is worth it's weight and price. Luckly I've search the web and found a killer deal.
I'm sure anyone can make this with a little bit of medium weight flexible aluminum, but it's also easy to just buy this once. It's indestructable if used right. For packing up, I wrap mine around the 22oz fuel bottle to avoid folding (which could eventually stress and weaken the metal over time)
